Underground Excavation Methods

The method of excavating underground can be achieved through drilling and blasting, which involves the use of controlled explosives to break rock for excavation. This technique is commonly used in mining, quarryings, and civil engineering projects, such as the construction of dams, tunnels, or roads. The process involves drilling holes into the rock, filling them with explosives, detonating them, removing the rubble, and reinforcing the tunnel surface. There are various types of explosives used, with different compositions and performance properties, depending on the rock's hardness. Another method of underground excavation is the use of tunnel boring machines (TBMs), also known as moles. These machines are designed to excavate tunnels with a circular cross-section through various soil and rock strata, ranging from hard rock to sand. TBMs can be designed to excavate non-circular tunnels as well. The advantages of using TBMs include limiting ground disturbance, producing a smooth tu
