Another method of underground excavation is the use of tunnel boring machines (TBMs), also known as moles. These machines are designed to excavate tunnels with a circular cross-section through various soil and rock strata, ranging from hard rock to sand. TBMs can be designed to excavate non-circular tunnels as well. The advantages of using TBMs include limiting ground disturbance, producing a smooth tu
